Maths

The KS3 curriculum at Wyvern Academy, is taught through routes that will enable pupils to progress from KS2 through to their GSCE targets. The routes are named after Pythagoras, Ada Lovelace and Alan Turing. Within each route the mathematical topics are taught through objective led lessons under the element headings of:

  • Place Value, Ordering and Rounding
  • Integers, Powers and Roots
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Number operations
  • Equations, formulae, expressions and identities
  • Sequences, functions and graphs
  • Measures and mensuration
  • Properties of shape and construction
  • Probability
  • Statistics

The KS4 curriculum at Wyvern Academy, uses the new 1-9 grading system. The GCSE specification in mathematics provides a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.

The specification does this by enabling students to:

  1. develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts
  2. acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
  3. reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions
  4. comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

The content is taught under the headings of:

Number

  • Structure and calculation
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Measures and accuracy

Algebra

  • Notation, vocabulary and manipulation
  • Graphs
  • Solving equations and inequalities
  • Sequences

Ratio, proportion and rates of change

Geometry and measures

  • Properties and constructions
  • Mensuration and calculations
  • Vectors

Probability

Statistics
