MUSIC AT WYVERN
So…Why do we study music?
Here are 5 facts about learning music:
• Children who study music from an early age can do better at a range of subjects.
• Children who play music learn there are rewards from hard work, practice and discipline.
• Playing a musical instrument helps develop children’ creative thinking and motor skills.
• Music helps children become more active listeners.
• It can also enhance their health and wellbeing and increase their stamina.
THE MUSIC CURRICULUM AT WYVERN
Students receive one lesson of music per week.
They follow a varied curriculum which enables them to improve their performance and compositional skills as well as their listening and appraising skills.
YEARS 7 & 8
Students learn about a broad range of musical subjects and complete 3 major project units during the year from the following areas of choice:
ASSESSMENT IN KS3
Topics are taught in half termly units in year 7 & 8 and termly units in year 9.
EDEXCEL BTEC LEVEL 1 AND 2 FIRST AWARD IN PERFORMING ARTS (MUSIC PERFORMANCE ROUTE)
This qualification provides an engaging and stimulating introduction to the world of music preparation for performances, good practice techniques, performance skills and developing their own style as a performer.
There are 3 units that are covered which are:
CORE UNIT- EXAM: (TAKEN IN YEAR 11) – INDIVIDUAL SHOWCASE
This takes place in the form of:
I. A (mock) job application in response to job opportunities set by the exam board. This involves researching suggested sites on the internet to find a suitable job for them, requesting for a job application pack and then using it to apply for the job along with their CV/ letter of application and a 2 minute demo DVD of their performances.
II. An audition exam when students perform 2 contrasting audition pieces to camera.
PREPARATION, PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTION
This unit involves all the things that need to happen before a performance is seen by an audience, followed by a performance.
I. Learn how to prepare for the production of a variety show, develop a performance piece as a member of a fictional performance company taking on a specific performance role.
II. Perform in a class variety show.
MUSIC PERFORMANCE SKILLS
In this unit students develop their music performance skills in order both improve as players/singers and by finding their own particular style/voice.
I. Explore and develop essential vocal/instrumental techniques that they should be using through teacher-led practical sessions.
II. Students will be required to play an active part in their own development by reflecting on their own and others progress by identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to progress along with suggestions about areas of performance that are in need of development.
The unit culminates with a performance showcase concert where students perform to an invited audience of family and friends.
GCSE MUSIC (9-1)
The new Edexcel GCSE in Music is very clearly structured where students study Music through performing, composing and listening and also by using music technology.

Instrumental/ Vocal Tuition
Durham County Music Service provides instrumental lessons in school.
We currently have teachers offering;
• Woodwind (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone)
• Upper Strings (Violin, Viola)
• Guitar (Acoustic, Bass and Electric)
• Drum Kit/Orchestral Percussion
A company called Music Works provides electronic keyboard lessons more information and a form to apply for these lessons can be provided by asking Mrs Maughan.
We also have choirs, band and instrumental clubs running throughout the week in lunchtimes and after school.
