Our vision in the Wyvern MFL Department is to provide excellence and opportunity by encouraging a culture of professional, independent learners who are interested in other cultures and the links languages have with other subjects and the world of work. Our young people will develop a life-long love of learning languages through the study of a wide range of relevant and though-provoking themes through expert delivery in their MFL lessons.

All pupils at Wyvern Academy are, without exception, entitled to a world-class linguistic education that is holistic, ambitious and aspirational by covering different aspects of the subject to open the wider world to them through the love of languages.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department aims to produce confident, capable linguists who can work independently in their Speaking and Writing with a range of more complex vocabulary, tenses and impressive structures. Our aim is to ensure that pupils are equally proficient in their Reading and Listening skills. We aim for our pupils to show an appreciation of culture of the countries where the language is spoken.

We are responsible for ensuring our young people are confident to pursue ambitious next steps in languages education, employment or training which will support their future careers through introducing careers related to languages, the importance of the wide range of transferrable skills that are used in MFL and how these can be used by young people in their future learning or career.

Knowledge and skills:

Through our curriculum, pupils:

• Develop confidence in their oral communication via Speaking skills, talking about a range of relevant topic in general conversation, real-life role play scenarios and describing a photograph. 
• Progress in their Writing skills, pupils are required to write regular extended pieces (at least 40 words in length) from the first half-term of Year 7 French (at least 5 extended pieces per year)
• Develop a love of Reading for pleasure in French by reading selected poetry and develop the skills to read fluently, having opportunity to explore wider significant texts in French
• Listen to, understand and appreciate a variety of spoken texts, including songs and rhymes
• Develop their memorisation skills
• Literacy skills are fed through our curriculum allowing pupils to understand the precise grammatical meta-language needed to make sense and progress in the subject.
• Numeracy skills are promoted through the nationally recognised LinguaMaths qualification from the first half-term of Year 7 and promoted throughout the KS3 and KS4 curriculum via the teaching of numbers, telling the time and interpreting graphs.
• Learn to self-regulate and work independently as well as collaboratively in French
